Wintergreen Oil

Wintergreen oil is steam-distilled from the leaves of Gaultheria procumbens, a low-growing shrub native to northeastern North America. The oil is composed almost entirely (96–99%) of methyl salicylate — a naturally occurring ester with a chemical structure closely related to aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid). This relationship is not coincidental: aspirin was originally synthesized as a derivative of salicylic acid compounds found in willow bark and plants like wintergreen.

Methyl salicylate's mechanism of action is well understood: it inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes — the same targets as ibuprofen and aspirin — reducing the production of prostaglandins that drive inflammation and pain. Topically applied, it also functions as a rubefacient, meaning it causes mild, controlled irritation of the skin's superficial capillaries, increasing local blood flow and contributing a gentle warming sensation.
